THE CLUBHOUSE
Everything Loop knows about running a golf trip. The games worth playing and how each one scores, what whoever’s organizing has to decide, and where to take the crew.
It took Smotherman 100 starts. Your crew has one of those too.
Austin Smotherman won the Bank of Utah Championship in his 100th PGA Tour start. Here's what that means for the player in your crew who's never won the trip.
Better Ball
Two players a side, everyone plays their own ball, and only the low net score counts on each hole. The most forgiving partner game in golf, and the one most crews start with.
How to Run a Ryder Cup on Your Golf Trip
Two teams, sessions across several days, and a cup that gets retained on a tie. How to pick the sides, size the points, choose the formats and keep it live until the last afternoon.
Bandon Dunes for a Group
Five courses, no carts, and weather that changes the golf twice a day. How many rounds a group can actually play, the order to play them in, and what to play for.
Scramble
Everyone hits, the side picks the best ball, and everyone plays again from there. The lowest-pressure format in golf and the right call for the second round of a long day.
Stableford
Points per hole instead of strokes per round. Good holes are rewarded, blow-ups cost you almost nothing, and a player out of the tournament on the second day still has something to play for.
Shamble
Take the best drive, then everyone plays their own ball in from there. Half scramble, half better ball, and the game that most reliably produces a good time.
Alternate Shot
Take turns hitting the same ball. The game that will pressure-test any friendship, and the one every Ryder Cup morning is built on.
Singles
You and your opponent, no partner to save you. The purest competition in golf and the reason the last day of a Ryder Cup feels the way it does.
Aggregate Team Score
Every score on the side counts, added up hole by hole. The team game with real consequences, and the one where you genuinely do not want to let your partner down.
Cheetah
Two dots on every hole: one for the best individual score, one for the best team score. Half individual competition, half team game, and it swings right to the end.
Scotch
Five points on every hole for five different things. A match can turn over completely in one swing, which is the entire point of it.
Umbrella
The same five points as Scotch, but each one is worth the number of the hole. The eighteenth is worth eighteen times the first, so nothing is over until it is over.
